A few Harvests and a few Aphids

This past weekend we had a windy storm that partially blew over some of the pepper plants. One of the things I have noticed about Mel's Mix is that plants come out of it very easily. The tomatoes that I had tied to the trellis did fine, but I need to tie up the Pepper plants this coming weekend.

I also harvested some red sails lettuce, Swiss chard, and radish this past Saturday. The radish are starting to get pretty hot with this very warm weather. Next year I need to start them earlier, but they still seem to doing okay.

On Sunday I harvested some more Collard Greens and Cilantro. It is amazing how fast the greens are growing now in this unusually warm weather. The leaves are much better when harvested every three to four days. Otherwise they get tough really quick. The good news is the powdery mildew problems I had earlier is almost gone. But the bad news is that the aphids have arrived. These are the first pests I have really noticed so far this Spring.

Today I made a soap spray to treat the aphids. I mixed one cup of vegetable oil with one tablespoon of dish liquid in a jar. Then I mixed one tablespoon of this solution with one cup of water in a spray bottle. I then applied to the underside of the Collard leaves late in the day to try to avoid them getting burned with the hot sun. I need to monitor to see if the aphid population diminishes.
The lettuce is growing very fast now. I am now able to harvest a large amount of lettuce every two or three days from the garden and I can hardly tell I picked anything.
