Orange County Master Gardeners Plant Fair

I visited the Orange County Master Gardeners Plant Fair today for the first time.

Tom and Joani MacCubbin had an entertaining talk on their
top pics for all types of plants, shrubs, and trees for this area.

I really liked this native Florida plant (Beach Sunflower), and I would like to use it for ground cover in our front yard sometime.

They had a lot of displays and vendors for hydroponic gardening. I would like to try one of the floating raft designs sometime for lettuce and mint.

My kids enjoyed making a worm farm sponsored by Our Vital Earth, Inc.

nice chart on why to eat organic when possible
They had a several examples of using the square foot gardening technique.

I need to use this as an example of when to harvest carrot - my kids seem to like to pull them long before they get this big!

Everything Flowering

Pretty much everything is flowering now. I need to watch closely for bugs now as this is usually when the bugs start to invade.

Salad harvest and Tomato tending

Harvested some Swiss Chard, young green Romaine, and a couple of Radish.

I also noticed fruit just starting to form on a female Gold Rush squash bloom. Some of the first male blooms have started to fall off.

Trellis Installation

Some of my Tomato plants are starting to lean so I put up my Trellis today.
Leaning Tomato

tools and equipment I used

I drilled some screws from the bottom of the U posts into the garden boxes for extra stability since I did not drive the seven foot U posts down all the way - I needed the extra height since these gardens are raised about a foot

. . . ran green coated wire across the top

I used wood for one of the Trellis because I thought I might like a more natural look. However, this one is not near as sturdy as the U Posts.

Potting up Herbs and Celery

I sowed these various herbs (Savory, Dill, Sage, Stevia) and Celery from seed on January 22nd, and these particular plants were very slow to grow. Everything else I sowed at that time, including Tomato and Pepper and lettuce are all planted out in the Spring garden and growing fast. Today I potted these remaining seedlings up. Hopefully they will start growing a little faster now that they have some extra room and I can plant them in the Fall garden.
